I had a piece of 4/4 purple heart shipped to me because I live over 200 miles from the store. The piece selected was perfect, and don't think that I would have gotten a better piece if I had selected it myself. Purple heart is pretty easy to work with, but if routing, use a backer board on it because it is quite brittle, and can/will chip. This wood really pops when finished...it's beautiful!

I needed to replace the rotted motor mount boards on my 1973 Grumman square stern canoe. I paid >$65 for Marathon's "OEM replacements", which were smaller, full of voids, and generally low quality; far inferior to the originals. These samples are large enough for 2 of them (I used 1 ea 12mm inside & 1 ea 18mm outside) to be cut for replacements, and can be easily painted (or varnished). if needed The outside board is about 1/4" shorter than the original, but still larger than what Marathon sent me. Much better quality than the alleged OEM replacements at less than 20% of the price :-)

These Spanish Cedar boards are beautiful! They smell great, their dimensions are consistent, no blemishes or cracks, and they're going to do wonders for my humidor. Surface texture seems fine enough to contact cigars without worrying about damaged wrappers. The unit price is very attractive, too. Delivery was smooth, the boards were securely wrapped, and the split box top makes for easy access and organization. I bought the 10pk of 5.5x36in boards. I'd love to see these in a wider format, perhaps 8in for one-piece shelves of a humidor. A man can dream, right? I'll definitely buy more of these, thanks!

I've ordered baltic birch of various thicknesses 3 times from Woodworkers Source. Each order has been top quality baltic birch. Due to cost and availability, there are lower grades of baltic birch out there. My local supply sells a lower grade with many voids and 'footballs' and charges the same as here. The only downside is inability to order a full sheet for obvious reasons.

I recently purchased small orders from Woodworker’s Source and was satisfied, but was hesitant for a while to pull the trigger and purchase a large order of 4/4 quartersawn oak, since the wood is moderately expensive and I like to go through the boards to find ones that have personal appeal…However, I am extremely satisfied with what the picker at The Woodworker’s Source chose for me. I purchased 100 board feet, although I only needed about 60 for a desk project, but I ordered more, erring on the side of caution that some of the boards I might receive will be unusable. I was so very wrong. The picker (Gil) assigned to my order, picked beautiful wood; 100% of the lumber is totally usable, and now I have the good problem of picking which boards I want to use for my project. My order was processed and shipped very fast, and I received all 100 board feet of lumber 5 days after I clicked submit on their order web page. Thank you guys for the service you provide!

So expensive. Be aware there are different grades of baltic birch. Some I bought locally was so bad with lots of footballs on the faces and voids on the inner lams. The sheet I received from Woodworkers Source was perfect - no footballs and no visible voids when cut.

When finished, the surface looks three dimensional, even though it's flat. Truly unique stuff. Everyone wants to touch it and "feel" the grain... but after sanding, it's smooth! Tongue oil finish looks great. A bit "splintery" after cutting. Be careful.

I tried this for a gallery frame, which I often make in native walnut. I didn't expect much, because I really like the streaks of color in the native stuff. This was maybe gonna be too uniform, maybe boring.\r\n\r\nHah! Not boring! With a simple oil finish, the result was incredibly beautiful. What it lacks in "character", it makes up with amazing uniformity and depth of color. And it's so easy to work - every inch of lumber was usable, no defects. Imagine if dark chocolate were a building material, and it came in giant slabs (and didn't melt or break!). That's what this is like to work, and to look at.\r\n\r\nI only wish it was available in 8/4, for some of my other projects...

I build speakers and subwoofers and using Home Depot plywood is a no-go. This stuff is much denser, much more solid, and way more beautiful. I had one piece that had some oval shaped veneer repairs which was a downside but I made sure that part was facing the inside of my sub enclosure so no one would ever see it. \r\n\r\nOther than that it cuts great on a CNC and looks beautiful. Very thick veneer with plenty of room for sanding!

This wood burns very easily, especially when routing. I was doing 1.5" plunges (yes that's deep but I have a OB 2200 router) and it would burn the mortises and almost caught fire once. It was very exciting and it smells wonderful. Also the wood has some tendency to tear out at corners but this can easily be worked around\r\nAnyway the finish is amazing and this is worth the extra cost over walnut

I got some of this for another project, but that’s on hold so I took some scrap and cut it to 3/4” for a little scroll saw project. It’s a beautiful wood and looks nice in small stuff, but it’s awful hard on scroll saw blade. I worked with some cocoboloa years ago, and they say this granadillo is the same stuff. This seems harder and heavier but its been a long time so maybe I’m wrong.

The boards are just about perfect. Three 5+, and three 7.5".\r\n\r\nThe only flaw is splits and cracks on the ends of two boards, extending 8". Knowing padauk's tendency to splinter, I expect this happened during shipping, and not as the result of drying.\r\n\r\nThe boards were well packed, but the ends / corners needed more protection .

in both the colloquial and literal senses. Boards arrived in good condition and were actually nicer than I expected. Edges will need jointed and faces planed to final finish. All boards were six feet long, which is great for my current project. I received one board that's about 5-1/2" wide. The rest are all over 6" wide up to 8" wide. I had one edge cut straight and each of 3 20 bf packs measured out just over 20 bf. It very well matches my previous order, which was for the new kitchen cabinets. So I build my own subwoofer enclosures and I have gotten birch ply from home depot or if I did not want to go through the process I'd jut get a prefab box or have one custom made. Many of the boards had what I would call fuzzy sides usually about an inch worth on one side. Certianly you can shave it if bit it can be significant on some boards

I fell in love with Sapele, but with my budget and beginner skill set I couldn't justify buying enough of it to make an entire large piece of furniture. \n\nThen across the aisle I saw the Red Grandis, and I remembered seeing someone who was making very nice furniture with this wood, stained to look like antique Mahogany. It's very consistent in color and grain pattern, with just enough visual interest to not take away from say, a figured door panel or drawer fronts. And it's about half the cost of Mahogany, Sapele, Walnut, etc. \n\nRegarding the board I just bought online, I requested 12 bd/ft of 4/4 and they took a 12 ft long, 12" wide, perfectly clear and cut it into 3 48" pieces. Couldn't have asked for anything better. \n\nI got more serious about woodworking at the start of Covid, and have bought something from WWS almost every month for the past year. I've never received anything less than great from them, and even though their prices are higher than my few local places I don't really have the urge to go elsewhere. Review for Granadillo 4/4 Lumber
For turned pieces, they come out looking like swirled milk chocolate marble, smooth and shiny, and that's even before sanding! Where to be especially careful is with routing. Whenever possible, go with the grain. Splinters from handling the rough boards can get easily infected. Pull them out and wash your hands as soon as possible. The resins in this wood can interfere with the curing of polyurethane, so an undercoating of shellac is recommended. I usually use shellac and then one of the so-called water-based polys, which are really acrylic. They're fine as long as you're sure it will never come in contact with alcohol. A top coat of real polyurethane works well with grandillo, using shellac and acrylic as undercoats. This wood is so heavy that it's impractical for furniture that would need to be moved. I made a butler tray table with granadillo and it was way too heavy. Screws inserted into the wood can be a problem. If the pilot hole is just a little too small, it will crack the wood, unlike other less dense hardwoods. The boards tend to come in smaller widths, so if wider boards are needed, you'll be doing a lot of joining. If planing these boards, take it slow with smaller increments between passes. For sanding on the lathe, your final sanding should be 400 grit (the wet-dry paper works very well dry). Don't fret over the any fine, residual, sanding marks as they disappear when applying shellac. I am currently using this for a colonial spinning wheel. It will be 50% heavier than it's identical spinning wheel done in walnut.

I was a little skeptical buying lumber online but I guess for the purpose of building a workbench and I don't really care so much about the figure on the wood, so why not give it a try. This first order is just to try it out and it was surprisingly good. The board came relatively flat (for 12 bf) and clear. The two faces looks like they were planed, not just rough sawn, not sure if they are all prepared the same say. I guess I'll find out. Will definitely get more as soon as the 8/4 are back in stock.

This was a great value for the variety and the size of the sample pieces. I was able to use this to study and better identify woods I was familiar with, and also learn more about the ones I wasn't. Some of the exotic pieces are species that, technically, are not sustainable and may become endangered in the near future. Normally I would have more mixed feelings about their inclusion but in this kit it was really helpful to be able to identify them and get a sense of which ones indeed beautiful and unusual versus which ones were more about trendiness and could easily be imitated by a more sustainable choice. I set them all up like a card catalog and made myself the start of a "wood dictionary."

I ordered two of these project packs and was overall very happy with the quality of lumber received. \n\nHowever, there was a hiccup in my order in which I received mostly boards that were under 6ft (most boards were 5ft and 4ft). The product description is a bit ambiguous -- implying that most of your boards should be at least 6ft -- but that isn't a guarantee (as in my case). The customer service at Woodworker's Source is excellent, and they worked with me to resolve the issue.\n\nThat being said, if you order 6/4 lumber not in the project pack -- you can request a minimum length (w/o a selection request charge). The overall cost is roughly the same as a project pack.

Read oak is inexpensive and durable. It is easy to work with as long as you don't plan on painting it. Not a gorgeous hardwood, it is perfect for drawer sides, backs and runners. It's called red oak because of its bark, not the color of the wood, but it is slightly redder than white oak. When used for tables and legs, it is durable. It performs adequately on the lathe, about as well as walnut. Its color is uniform, which makes it easy for joining. Planing it and sanding it is fairly easy. I like to use the reddish stains on it, like Varathane Classic red mahogany and red oak and not the walnut stains. Beware painting it because the tannins in the wood will leach through.

Review for Granadillo 4/4 Lumber
My specialty is making colonial spinning wheels, trying to sell them on Etsy and I actually sold one of them. The walnut ones seem to be the most popular but the sapele ones are much better as it's a denser wood. A few years ago, I made a butler tray table out of granadillo. It was very heavy. I made the mistake of lacquering it and it crazed, so I made another of sapele and used polyurethane instead - much better. But getting back to the spinning wheels, I thought that the increased mass of the granadillo would make for a better flywheel. Granadillo isn't easy to work with but on the lathe, it looks gorgeous before even being sanded smooth. It looks like a dark walnut with wavy, reddish lines in it. When planing it, take tiny bites or you will quickly wear out the knives. Coming out of the planer, it looks smooth, almost like a dark, polished marble. For pieces too wide for the planer, a drum sander works the best. Splinters from handling the boards have been a problem. They are more irritating than sapele and getting them out of my hands has required using a magnifying glass. When turning granadillo on the lathe, the increased mass of the particles is immediately noticeable. The particles travel further, bouncing off of my lab coat and then going up inside my face hood! Turning it is much easier than walnut and better than with sapele for a phenomenal appearance at the end. Granadillo boards are not very wide, so you will need to join them. Since the wood is so dense and heavy, I don't recommend using it for large projects like tables, which would be difficult to handle and move. You wouldn't want to stain it with anything. I'm not sure about varnishing it since the wood will be harder than any consumer-available varnish.

Review for Alder Knotty 8/4 Lumber
A book I have on hand tool woodworking recommended Alder for a learning wood, calling it "poor man's cherry". I found it perfect for learning to cut joints and make small boxes so far. The knots aren't as big as I thought they would be, and there is plenty of clear material in between them to work with. \n\nI picked it up earlier this year when 8/4 was going for $2.20 ish a bd/ft....another huge bonus. I was sort of shocked when I upgraded from construction lumber to "real" furniture wood on how expensive it can get. This is a good alternative, if you are still honing your skills and making frequent mistakes. \n\nI was surprised at how smooth and shiny this wood gets after using a smoothing plane on it. Much better looking than poplar, IMO, and cheaper, too. It does demand very sharp tools, which can help force you to develop good sharpening habits as well. \n\nI'll be buying more for sure. Also, one board was damaged in shipping and the folks here replaced it quickly and without anything more than a couple pictures. Great customer service!

Better than expected
Review for Alder Knotty 8/4 Lumber
A book I have on hand tool woodworking recommended Alder for a learning wood, calling it "poor man's cherry". I found it perfect for learning to cut joints and make small boxes so far. The knots aren't as big as I thought they would be, and there is plenty of clear material in between them to work with.
I picked it up earlier this year when 8/4 was going for $2.20 ish a bd/ft....another huge bonus. I was sort of shocked when I upgraded from construction lumber to "real" furniture wood on how expensive it can get. This is a good alternative, if you are still honing your skills and making frequent mistakes.
I was surprised at how smooth and shiny this wood gets after using a smoothing plane on it. Much better looking than poplar, IMO, and cheaper, too. It does demand very sharp tools, which can help force you to develop good sharpening habits as well.
I'll be buying more for sure. Also, one board was damaged in shipping and the folks here replaced it quickly and without anything more than a couple pictures. Great customer service!

I got 2 different trees of Granadillo in my order. Four are 7 and-a-half inches wide, two 4 and-a-half inches wide. All of them are about 72 inches in length.\n\n Three pieces were of a lighter color with some pretty figure. One of the lightly colored boards kind of reminded me of teak. The other two light ones looked like they were ripped in half from one really wide board, so gluing them up will look perfect.\n\nThe other three were dark rich brown/red with a purple hue, and beautiful dark streaks. All of these had different grain patterns. \n\n Absolutely gorgeous stuff. I'm buying more of this for sure... Without my wife's knowledge hehehehe.

Sometimes, less is more so please consider this shorter review as indicative of that. The Walnut was very high quality overall. Very little sap wood, no cracks, etc. I had 1 piece in the original order that did have more curvature than I could use. I sent a photo to them and a few days later the replacement arrived, free of any additional charges. Product and service in particular were great. I would highly recommend. The risk is low, the product is good and the service is great. The latter part is what separates the best buying experiences from the worst!

I made a 6' by 4' dining room table from 5 slabs of paduak, biscuited and glued. Lot of sanding, jointed with Powermatic 6 foot table with Bird knives. Used epoxy with paduak dust to fill pores and that really brought out the grain. The wood chosen for me was excellent, almost no warping and lost about 1/16th inch with finishing. Very messy with dust and should really use a respirator, which I didnt. The table is absolutely beautiful, started out with excellent slabs.
