Difficult for my DeWalt DW735 planer to handle

Review for Roasted Ash 4/4 Lumber

I love the way this lumber cuts on the table saw and miter saw. I also love the appearance after finishing with either Clark's Cutting Board Oil or Tung Oil! It looks and feels great. \r\n\r\nI purchased a bunch to make small trays as holiday gifts, and to use for face frames, stiles, and rails for a set of upscale shop cabinets I'm building. I had Woodworkers Source give me a straight line rip on one edge for easy ripping and cross cutting (I don't have a jointer). When I got to planing, I found that roasted ash doesn't produce the chips and shavings that most other woods I've planed produce. Instead, much of the removed material gets pulverized to a fine powder that coats the rollers in my planer and prevents the board from feeding. To stay on schedule, I had to use a thinner scrap of maple board to push the stock through the planer.

Not 3/4 All The Way

Review for Canarywood 18" Cutting Board Strips

Pro's: The wood looks good. I bought this as a replacement for Yellowheart for a cutting board since the Yellowheart was out of stock. \r\n\r\nCon's: It isn't 3/4" all the way down the board. One end is 3/4" and the other is 5/8". I was going to rip these to 1/4" strips, but now I have to change it up to 3/16" or buy extra boards. The plan was to get two 1/4" out of each board to straddle a 1/2" Purpleheart twice and 1/2" Wenge once. Dropping the rips to 3/16" is going to change my overall dimensions by 3/8"

Review for 1/2" Granadillo Thin Lumber Pack - Select Count & Size

I bought some of this Granadillo a couple of weeks ago. I bought the 5-7 width thinking that I would get some 6 inch wood but they were all just barely longer than 5 inches and one of the boards was 1/2 inch as advertised but it tapered down to 3/8 inches and the board was slightly warped. I won't be able to use all of this board. That is my reason for the 3 rating.

Using with laser

Review for 1/8" Baltic Birch Pre-Cut Plywood Pack (Choose Your Size)

I have mixed feelings about this Birch plywood. For each order I’ve placed, shipping it has seemed to take awhile. When it does arrive, it is nicely packaged. I’ve ordered this plywood multiple times before. Previous purchases were good, hence placing more orders. My last order I am finding the multiple sheets that have glue pockets in them; very frustrating as I need to increase power, reduce speed, cut again to get thru the glue pockets which results in extra charring.

My Sweet Sweet Baltic, It’s So Good To See You Again!!

Review for 3/4" Baltic Birch Pre-Cut Plywood Pack (Choose Your Size)

Oh how I missed you Baltic, it’s been too long!! I’m sure I’m not the only one that discovered this site while on a quest to find B.B. plywood because all the places local have been out of stock for quite some time and have no idea when they’ll get it back. If you’re lucky the wholesalers in your area aren’t a bunch of pretentious jerks, understand that independent semi professional woodworkers need quality plywood too and will have the decency to sell to you. I am not that lucky. That's how I ended up here. Overall I gotta say this is some nice B.B. and from what I can tell is totally legit. I deducted two stars, one for each issue I had (please note these are relatively minor and are more for woodworkerssource to hopefully take note of. They should in no way prevent you from buying this plywood). The first is my 20x30 sheets weren’t a full 20x30, they’re more like 19-13/16x29-13/16. I wouldn’t even have mentioned this if the 24x46 SuperCore sheets I ordered as well weren’t cut spot on. If they can cut SuperCore to full size they can cut the B.B. the same. The second issue is what others have written about which is the shipping protection. Now mine came with very minimal corner damage and is nothing more than what I expected and planned for. I think woodworkerssource should have an option for customers to pay $10, 15, 20 more for added corner/shippping protection. I’m willing to bet most customers would be happy to pay a little extra for this added protection. That’s all I got! Again, I’m a satisfied customer and I will be ordering again. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it! Happy woodworking!!

Structurally excellent, aesthetically meh

Review for 8/4 Premium Black Walnut Lumber Pack - Select Count & Size

I never thought I'd spend $700 for three walnut boards but hey, that's the way things are today and convenience costs money.\r\nThe boards arrived promptly in a single box container; there were a few nicks and dents, one of them severe. I took photos but see not place to include them with this review.\r\nThe boards are appropriately sized with zero cracks or problematic knots. Overall I'm satisfied but the shipping damage and very ordinary grain patterns are disappointing for premium lumber.\r\nMy advice to WW Source is to double box your shipments; my advice to my fellow woodworkers is to use this resource for everyday projects but if you have a fine furniture build go do a hardwood supplier and hand pick your boards.

Plywood fine, packaging sketchy

Review for 3/4" Baltic Birch Pre-Cut Plywood Pack (Choose Your Size)

First, the plywood came with minimal damage, considering it's packaging I'm happy with it.\r\nHowever, the packaging is, to me, a bit shocking that is the standard. \r\nSix 20"×30" plywood stacked against each other with about 4" of shrink-wrap around them on one end. \r\nThat's it...no corner protection at all, just a sliver of shrink-wrap and a basic cardboard box. \r\nThe bottom of it slightly damp from sitting on my porch. \r\nI figured that wouldn't matter cause obviously it would be wrapped with something to prevent the plywood from getting wet. 90% exposed with only cardboard as protection. \r\nWhy the entire plywood wasn't wrapped in shrink wrap I have no idea.\r\nSo if I'm at work or somewhere it sits outside and it rains....there was no protection at all??\r\nAgain, thankfully it wasn't pouring out of the would have been ruined, add to that zero bumper protection with slight damage to the edges and I think I will avoid any future orders. \r\nThat type of packaging is screaming to have problems in future orders.

I was shorted on Board Footage

Review for Spanish Cedar 8/4 Lumber

Aside from being shorted on board footage in terms of actual size, I was shorted even further as the bands used to secure the lumber together were overtightened by someone with hulk strength. This left me having to trim even more off the boards. On this order, I used a $10 coupon, so maybe that led the company to short me a bit. I should say that in a prior order for the exact same Spanish Cedar (including same board footage,) that was definitely worth 5 stars. But this order left me pretty disappointed. Getting ready to place another order for the exact same thing, so we will see what happens.

Widths too variable

Review for Classic Cutting Board Kit - Maple, Cherry & Walnut

I liked the sale, ordering 5 or 6 kits, over a month’s time, plus extra strips. I was relying on the described dimensions to be accurate. Not so. Lengths and thicknesses not a problem. But, the widths of 1 3/4” were anywhere from 1 13/16” to less than 1 11/16”; the cherry strips, especially, were all undersized. Since I don’t have a planer, I had to rely on my benchtop jointer to make everything uniform beforehand…a lot of needless work.

Lighweight but with really ugly patches

Review for 3/4" (18mm) Lightweight Premcore Plus White Birch Pre-Cut Plywood Pack (Choose Your Size)

This stuff is lightweight but beware, The sheet I got (4 pcs 24x46") had a lot of ugly knot hole patches - one piece on both faces. I don't necessarily dislike knots but the large knots are dark yet filled with a light-colored patch material that is so ugly that you can only cut around or hide them. Okay for shop furniture or if you plan to paint it.

Meh

Review for Premium Black Walnut 4/4 Lumber, Clear One Side

In short, I probably won't buy wood online again. \r\n\r\nGenerally, the "good" face was just ok--not much sapwood, but some pretty deep saw marks (3/32") in part of one of the boards. Because of the composition of the board, planing it off led to exposure of sapwood around the edges. The other board a significant bow that made it unusable for my intended project (I would say out of tolerance for the 3/4 final thickness advertised).\r\n\r\nMy sample size is 2 boards from one order, so perhaps it was just an outlier.

Most boards were great, some less than I expected

Review for 4/4 Cherry Lumber Pack - Select Count & Size

I ordered these a few weeks ago and they arrived quickly and we’ll packaged. 4 boards were great, nice and flat and straight, even with few tool marks on the unsurfaced sides. 2 of the boards were not great. One was a bit more warped than I would have picked if I was at a lumber yard and it had about crack running through the edge to about 2” in. One other board was flat sawn and about 2’ was REALLY rough on on both sides it was supposed to be surfaced. \r\n\r\nOverall decent boards but was hoping for a bit better quality/board selection.

First time purchaser

Review for 1/2" Genuine Mahogany Thin Lumber Pack - Select Count & Size

The pack arrived basically as described: 6 4' boards of uniform width (not random) just under 6 inches. The color and grain is generally good, but varied. Only two are similar enough to use to create a wider board. Few insect bore holes, but strategically placed to limit the usable width/length on two boards. Free shipping increased the board foot price to nearly $5 more than their non-packaged lumber. All things considered, the selection is fair to have on-hand for some future project, but expensive. None were "stand out" pieces I would have selected if browsing in-person. YMMV.

Looks good, cuts great, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO STEAM BEND

Review for 1/8" Baltic Birch Pre-Cut Plywood Pack (Choose Your Size)

I will preface this review by saying that my negative experience with this plywood was entirely a result of it failing in a very specific application, specifically steam bending. Out of the (extremely well-protected) packaging, the wood looks excellent, with crisp edges and a precise cut. I table-sawed it into the pieces I wanted with no issues. However, after a few minutes of steaming, the layers of wood became fully de-laminated, and the inner layer looked like a lasagna noodle. Whatever binder used here is vulnerable to heat, or water, or both. \n\nThat's a real shame, because Woodworkers Source is one of the few places online you can get a full 60" length. It also looks fantastic, but I've had to re-design my project around this shortfall.

I've ordered Baltic birch plywood, 1/8" and 1/4", several times. It's been the best I could find. This current order is not quite up to the quality of the previous order. It's not bad, just not quite as good. More patches, and on both sides. No big deal, but you asked.

Nice stock, but not best for 3D CNC

Review for Basswood 8/4 Lumber

Order was prepared precisely to my specifications, packed very well, and arrived timely without damage. The stock was 95% clear throughout, and I had no trouble avoiding the imperfections. I use a CNC machine to 3D carve solid bodies (eg, models), and this was the first time using this species. Probably not best for this purpose. 1. It is a bit fibrous, clogging up the router vacuum. 2. It leaves a furry finished surface in some grain bands.

A beautiful but very dense wood = heavy

Review for Granadillo 4/4 Lumber

Narrow widths means that you will need to join many pieces, so you will need the best router bits for this very dense wood. Color varies from walnut to mahogany shades, which makes joining similarly colored pieces problematic. Weight makes this not ideal for large furniture pieces.\n\nI built a butler tray table with this. It is a small tablet but quite heavy. The heads of the supplied brass screws would snap off when attaching the 8 brass butler tray hinges. I found some #8, star-drive, brass-colored screws at Lowe's that worked much better, but if the pilot hole was too narrow, the wood would crack and if too large the screws would not fully tighten. I could not drill the perfect screw hole for them. Applying finish to the main table top has been an on-going nightmare, which could be due to my climate, technique and materials. I used Minwax Special Walnut stain, then Gemini semi-gloss pre-cat lacquer. That finish had many defects, especially over the many joined edges of the main table top. Re-spraying never helped and each time I would have to sand off the tough lacquer down to the bare wood and re-stain it. After half a dozen times, the table top is now less than 3/4", which requires shorter hinge screws! It seems that the narrow table pieces finished better with less defects (such as the table base, legs and the narrow leaves). The sprayed lacquer tended to not adhere that well. I finally discovered that sprayed Zinsser shellac as an undercoating to the lacquer worked great. But when I moved the table from my hot and humid shop to my air conditioned house, the lacquer eventually developed many deep fissures, looking like cracked glass. I read that spraying it with plain lacquer thinner would fix this but it did nothing (the thinner evaporated in seconds). I tried re-spraying it yesterday with thinned lacquer with retarder but at 90 degrees ambient temperature, that didn't turn out well. I will try poly on top of shellac next.\n\nI am hesitant to recommend this heavy, brittle wood. If you only plan to use tongue-and-groove joints, glue joints and dovetail joints, you might do okay with granadillo. Overall, I have had better success using sapele wood (from Woodworkers Source) for more substantial furniture pieces. Sapele looks like genuine mahogany with beautiful stripes and with just an initial coat of clear shellac, it looks gorgeous and it has enough "give" to put wood screws into it.

Purchased the JWBS-14-CS, 14" bandsaw. Assembly was easy. Adjustments are easy and the cuts are smooth, although I did purchase a 3/4" blade from a different source. Over all, I'm very happy with the product. The only drawback, no fence and it doesn't seem as though you can order one. That part number seems to be discontinued and I can't find any information on an alternate that will work. Guess I'll have to make one.

Aromatic Cedar

Review for Aromatic Cedar 4/4 Lumber

Normally everything that I receive is wonderful, however with the Cedar, the boards ended up being two separate boards to equal the width that I needed and I wasn't prepared for that. Secondly the boards were both severely cracked when I received them. I do not know if this was due to shipping or if it was sent that way, but Cedar is a soft wood and so you should probably order more footage then you really need just in case the edges are cracked.

Boards fur mantle

Review for 3/4" Red Oak PRE-CUT Pack, 4 Boards (Choose Your Size)

I bought these boards to make a mantel and to Stain it the same color as my new floors in my mid century.. The boards came quickly. The only problem was 2 were beautiful and the other two one had a huge knot in it even though it said it was best and one had two drill holes in it! So I used the two beautiful pieces for the top and piece facing out the knoted piece for the bottom and the drilled holes piece for the side. It worked out but I wasn't happy about the quality of 2/4 boards. Two were gorgeous the other two not! Weird.

1/8" Baltic Birch Pack Value Slipping

Review for 1/8" Baltic Birch Pre-Cut Plywood Pack (Choose Your Size)

This will be my 7th. order even though my last order was very poor. Warping was much worse then usual. Both sides had large knots, repair pucks, etc. The grain was raised on both sides; as though these sheets had gotten wet and then dried. Had to spend a lot of time sanding and working around the warping to make it a usual product. Very suspicious since the wood is being shipped from (I assume) a very low humidity area to an east coast coastal town with high humidity and arrived with all the traits of dampness and improper storage.\nFirst 5 orders were fine so I'm hoping number 6 was a bad exception and this order will be at least as good as my earlier orders. Otherwise, even though the price was good the quality will destroy any value. At least in my situation. I'm recommending the product with caution.

Review for 1/8" Baltic Birch Pre-Cut Plywood Pack (Choose Your Size)

Most of the times I've ordered, the product was outstanding.\nBut the last order, the wood was a lot more red than white. Think heartwood. Also a little "fuzzy", needing a lot of sanding if you want a smooth surface. And even then, I wasn't able to get every piece smooth. After some "fine grit" sanding I could still feel "ribs" in the grain of the wood, when I ran my fingers across it.\nAnd a lot more "plugs" than I'm accustomed to. But I managed to make it work.\n1 bad batch out of probably 10 or so.

Most of the times I've ordered, the product was outstanding. But the last order, the wood was a lot more red than white. Think heartwood. Also a little "fuzzy", needing a lot of sanding if you want a smooth surface. And even then, I wasn't able to get every piece smooth. After some "fine grit" sanding I could still feel "ribs" in the grain of the wood, when I ran my fingers across it. And a lot more "plugs" than I'm accustomed to. But I managed to make it work. 1 bad batch out of probably 10 or so.

Disappointed!!

Review for Cherry 6/4 Lumber

I choose to pay for selection request and unfortunately I was charged 100 $ extra for 100 bd foot but I didn't received what I asked. I contacted customer service but they just ignored my complaint and I had to file a dispute with my credit card company... The lumber that I received was good quality but was not the size that I requested... I guess 100% satisfaction is not true!!

Little pricey for what i recieved

Review for Cherry 4/4 Lumber

Ordered 8bf of this 4/4 Cherry. Color is lighter than I expected, even my mentor questioned me if I was sure that the wood was cherry. It appears that on one of the boards, the straight line edge had some damage which defeated the purpose of having it. Also it appears the packing was poorly done as there where divots all over the largest board. I figure this happened during shipping. Not a big deal but had to plane to remove the divots that where too deep for sanding out. This is the first time I have ordered a large amount of wood online. I'm thinking I'll stick to just turning stock and try to local purchase big pieces.

Hondurus? mahogany

Review for Genuine Mahogany 4/4 Lumber

This "genuine mahogany" is the lightest mahogany I have ever seen in 50 years (even African mahogany). I received 10 boards, 7 had black checking in the grain (4 very heavy). Only 3 "good" color boards. Good: no splits in ends, well bound and packaged
Woodworkers Source Responds
Ed, this mahogany is recently planed from rough, so it hasn't had the time to oxidize to the usual dark mahogany color. So, do not worry, all it needs is some time and you'll see the color come back. We are happy to replace anything that is unsuitable. Thanks.

Review for Red Oak 1/2" Thin Lumber

I ordered this woo because the add stated they had a 4" to 10" variety of boards. Since I could use several different sizes I didn't request any certain size. I expected to receive a variety of sizes but instead I received 17 boards all under 5"\n\n Make sure you state exactly the size you want or you will get what they want to get rid of first. I wrote and complained but I never even got a reply. So much for 100% guarantee.

Review for Alder Knotty 4/4 Lumber

Ordered it mainly because of the price. Will not do again as several pieces still had some bark or saw/scuff marks on the wood. I have ordered many other woods in the past and have never been disappointed until now.

Review for Purple Heart Hardwood Sample (1/2"x3"x6")

While the color and substance of this wood is very nice, it has an unpleasant odor and seems to smell more the more you work with it. If your project is going to suffer from it smelling bad, this wood may not be a very good choice.

Lots of Knots and Waste

Review for Natural Hard Maple 4/4 Lumber

Interesting grain patterns but 3 of 5 boards had huge knots, areas where the wood wasn't planed leaving lots of waste. To call this hand picked is hard to imagine. I feel like I was given the discards to see what I could do with it. Won't try this again!

whats up

Review for Genuine Mahogany 4/4 Lumber

the product was great, however, after I ordered I found that our local store had the same item on sale for $4.99/bd ft. I tend to believe that this item was sent to many dealers because of overstacked or something. Any way I spent $4.00 more a ft. than my local store had it for.

Not the best, but decent wood

Review for Hard White Maple 4/4 Lumber

I made an initial order to start my project and see what kind of wood I could get from woodworkerssource.com. I gotta say that of the 2 boards I got, more than half of the 2nd one is unusable. Colors are off and there's a huge knot in the grain then a large dark discoloration going down the grain. Also there is a pretty deep hole looks like someone jabbed it with a sharp tack hammer. I'm wondering if I should chance making a bigger order or not. From the wood that is usable I think it's going to work really well for my project. The option to rip one edge helps me out a lot and the 2S finish is much nicer than getting rough stock. Overall, I'm part way satisfied. I usually hope to have minimal scrap, but maybe that only happens when you pick the stock yourself?

minor let down

Review for Premium Black Walnut 8/4 Lumber, Clear One Side

The piece of wood I received was very well packaged and delivered exactly as expected and on time. There is one flaw in the board that will reduce the overall amount of usability. There is a small circular knot about 6 inches from one end that actually is an open hole almost clear through the board. Other than that I am very pleased with the selection that was made on my behalf.

Review for Alder 4/4 Lumber

he wood arrived in good shape and is very handsome. But it's 15/16" thick. If you need or are expecting 3/4" or even 13/16" (as was advertised), you'll need to do some planing.

minimum size instead of maximum

Review for Shedua 4/4 Lumber

I think that the size choice for the lumber should be a little closer to what is being offered. I received the Shedua 4/4 lumber in 4" widths only 4 ft long. Although my project can use some of these smaller boards, I usually receive larger boards when I order the 4/4 lumber. I will probably have to set aside these boards until the appropriate project comes along, if ever. The lumber was in good shape and had nice grain with no warps, but I think a 6" width or larger and a 6ft length or larger category should be offered. I know I could have called and specified sizes, but this had never been an issue in the past. At least not with the over 400 board feet i have ordered this year.

knot knot

Review for Natural Hickory 4/4 Lumber

Large knot that make 1/3 of the board unusable. I was very surprised that my "fellow woodworker" who hand selected my board one board at time would have intentionally selected this particular board. Alas, the rest of the board was useable and the other hickory board was good so all in all I won't complain too much. I've ordered a lot of wood here and have to say 95% of it was top notch

Almost great

Review for Premium Black Walnut 8/4 Lumber, Clear One Side

It was a fine hunk of wood at first glance. Then I turned it over and noticed that about 5 inches of area at one end was not fully planed flat. There was a full section there that was thinner than the entire piece otherwise. After realizing that this was not going to affect my project and I started getting in to cutting down the pieces I needed, I also noticed that the same end had apparently been placed in a planar on both sides as it had a clear dip on the top and bottom while the rest of the surfaces were planed nice and flat. It was still a beautiful piece of wood but it was just not as exact as I would have hoped for.

4" verses 4'

Review for Cherry 4/4 Lumber

I am happy with the wood itself although it has a couple of knots that I wasn't expecting. What I was unhappy about was, I asked for a piece of 8" by 8' lumber. which if needed you could split the length of 8' keeping it 8" wide. And you split the width making it 4" wide. But I have made it work, and do appreciate being able to comment on my experience. I am using this cherry wood for an intarsia of a bald eagle. I will be taking pictures of the process of this project, and if I am happy with them I will forward them to you. I look forward to ordering from you again.

Great wood quality - did not follow special request

Review for Cherry 8/4 Lumber

I order regularly from WwS and, as usual, the quality of the wood I received was very good. However, I paid extra for a special request that I receive a piece or pieces that allowed me to get four 2- inch wide pieces 5 feet long for the legs on a bookcase. The piece of 8/4 cherry I received was 8 feet long and 7 inches wide. Kind of hard to get what I needed and I had about 4 bf of left over. Not happy this time.

Very nice figure

Review for Black Limba 4/4 Lumber

This wood has great color and pattern, and will look marvelous on any project. The reason I gave it only 3 stars was that the figured portion is only about 60% of the board running lengthwise, unlike the website photo The remainder was nearly white. This fact makes it a very expensive choice.

Review for Padauk African 4/4 Lumber

the wood is as advertised, very pretty. However, mine was really beat up. in fact it had been dropped so hard that there we rocks imbedded in the wood at points. the wood is hard enough that this would take some big-time impact. so much to for the velvet chariot! lots of edges really chewed up. i worked around most of it and my project is coming along, but I would have to think hard about the shipping issues if I were to do this again.

Review for 1-3/4" Leopardwood Pre-Cut Squares
