Floating Shelves with LED Accent Lights

The bottoms of the middle and top shelves have thin round LEDs inset to cast a little light on the shelves below. And the top one also has a light installed facing up.

I like how they add just a kiss of light to the room, and that the outlet is on a wall switch to make these feel more of a fixture in the house.

They're really lightweight thanks to the box construction and materials:

  • 1/4" white oak veneered plywood for the tops & bottoms
  • 3/4" white oak ripped to 2" widths give the shelves the appearance that they're 2" thick solid shelves

I beveled the show edges and sculpted them a bit to soften the shape a bit so they weren't so boxy looking.

From there, I made plywood bracket with "arms" to support each shelf. That bracket also makes it really easy to level the shelves.
