Yellow Oleander box

I made this for my granddaughter's 18th birthday. The Yellow Oleander, Cascabela thevetia, came from a landscape tree we cut down about 10 years ago. A piece of the trunk was sealed and sat in my workshop, all these years, waiting for a project. Finally, I sawed it into lumber. The box was sized to use the available material. The Madagascar Rosewood, Dalbergia maritima, came from strips I acquired many years ago. The box measures 9" x 5", 4" tall, walls are 1/2" thick, has mitered corners with splines, the top is beveled. The interior bottom is lined with black leather. Finish is clear lacquer. The natural rosewood was a gorgeous deep burgundy color, it turned black with the lacquer. Surprise!
