AV Cabinet

Not being the type to look at a big black slab sitting in my living room I decided to build a cabinet for my OLED screen and to hold the AV equipment. All the plans and builds I saw online were essentially ungainly large boxes that just looked bulky and uninteresting. I decided to make more of a stand looking setup that used the cabinet for the TV as the backing for a pair of shelves that held the center speaker and AV unit.

The floating shelves are torsion box construction for maximum rigidity and are skinned in luan and laminated in white Formica. The shelves help to keep the plywood carcass of the TV cabinet straight and flat, as despite it being constructed of 3/4" plywood still wanted to bow slightly. The stability of the cabinet assembly is assisted by a 8" x 16" boxed in foot that sits under the lower shelf and conceals the wireless surround speaker unit, which gives the illusion of the shelves being unsupported.

The plywood cabinet base for the TV is stained with Rubio Monocote Black, and then strips of walnut are secured from the inside with wood screws. The walnut was finished with Rubio Monocote Pure and rubbed out with a white fiber pad.

The TV is raised and lowered via remote with an electronic lift and the top tilts back when the lift is activated, and it automatically lowers when the TV is retracted back into the cabinet.

Finish: Rubio Monocote Pure
