Wavy Wooden Flag
The flag swayed as if it had a life of its own, its rippling waves moving in harmony with the unseen force of the wind. It had stood through storms, through sunrises, through moments of silence and moments of triumph. Each fold and bend told a story—a whisper of history carried on the breeze.
Carved from wood but flowing like fabric, this flag was more than just a symbol; it was a testament to resilience. The deep reds and soft, natural tones of the stripes were not merely painted but felt—like the struggle and sacrifice woven into the nation it represents. The stars, crisp and bold against the blue, stood as reminders of unity, of dreams once fought for and dreams yet to come.
Somewhere, in a distant memory, a soldier once saluted a flag like this. A child once stood beneath it, eyes wide with wonder, pledging allegiance before even fully understanding the weight of its meaning. A traveler once saw it flying high on a foreign shore and felt the unmistakable pull of home.
Though made of wood, this flag would never be still. It would forever appear to wave, to move, to remind all who saw it that freedom, like the wind, is a force that never ceases—one that shapes, bends, and carves its way into the hearts of those who believe in it. Beautiful execution by John Foltz for our Americana 2025 contest.
