Japanese Toolbox
These will be Christmas presents for my 2 grandsons. The Ash from Woodworkers Source was beautiful and I used the piece with the most character for the lids. In spite of super sharp chisels I found Ash to be tough to work with, doesn't pare cleanly on the mortises which added to the challenge. Added a sliding, removalble tray of Beech. A short dowel was added to the tapered, locking wedge to make it easier for them to open their "treasure chest". Rather than the traditional nails I used glue, screws, and Sapele plugs for the joinery. Sapele is also used to spline the tenons. It is so difficult to find gifts for kids "these days" my thoughts are that something Opa made for them will make these special -- spoken like an old guy right??
