hardwood lumber sizes
Sapele lumber comes in random widths and lengths, with a uniform thickness.
Here's what you can expect:
13/16" Thickness

Also known as 4/4, S2S.
Surfaced 2 sides (S2S) from rough sawn lumber. You should be able to yield approximately 3/4" thickness after you flatten, plane, shape or sand your project parts to fit your project

4" to 10" Widths

This is the range of widths that are usually available in this wood.

  • Price shown is for a random selection of widths within this range.
  • Request special width selection using the "Minimum Size Request" box in the order form.
  • Edges are rough sawn
  • Straight edge ripping service is available for a small fee

6' to 14' Lengths

This is the range of lengths that we might have in stock at any given time. But there are some things to know:

No Minimum Purchase
We're easy to buy from! That means we can cut you a short piece(s) from long boards if you want.

Length Shipping Restrictions

Showing off a consistent color that's much like Mahogany, this ribbon stripe Sapele comes with a much lower price.

The ribbon stripe figure comes from quarter sawing the log - the interlocked grain of Sapele produces the length wise stripes, or ribbons. (See this picture in our Project Gallery) An added benefit to quarter sawn lumber is the utmost stability.

Various lumber thickness as compared to one another
  1. Decide how much board footage you need
  2. Factor in enough to work with! You'll want to arrange grain patterns, sort color, fix mistakes, run test cuts, make finish samples, etc.
  3. Lumber comes in random widths and lengths. If you need special size considerations, please let us know by using the "Minimum Size Request" box in the order form or by confirming your needs by phone or email.
  4. Expect your final amount of footage to change slightly. Buying by the board foot is an exercise in estimation, therefore we don't know the precise amount of footage you'll receive (and be billed for) until we physically select the wood for your order.
  5. We want to get your order right! So we may need to contact you for clarification. Please use a good phone and email during checkout.

This is the unit of measurement for hardwood lumber when it's bought/sold in random widths and random lengths.

Board footage is a measurement of volume, and it's abbreviated Bd. Ft.

One board foot is equal to 144 cubic inches.

board foot formula

It's a fraction that refers to rough (RGH) sawn thickness of lumber, and it tells you approximately how many quarters of an inch make up the thickness.

Surfaced lumber is thinner because it started out as rough sawn but it's been planed smooth. Planing removes thickness.

Rough Sawn (RGH) Surfaced (S2S)
4/4 ~1" 13/16"
5/4 ~1-1/4" 1-1/16"
6/4 ~1-1/2" 1-5/16"
8/4 ~2" 1-13/16"
12/4 ~3" 2-13/16"

Unless otherwise specified, our lumber is "Surfaced 2 Sides" or S2S for short.

Check out our article if you want the full explanation.

If you can cut your own pieces to size, here's how we can help:

  1. Enter requirements into the order form where it says, "Minimum Size Request"
  2. Tell us what you want to acheive or make
  3. You will receive wood that can yeild what you need. (You will create the final size)
  4. We may need to contact you for clarification

You will cut and/or join your material to create the finished sizes you need. We'll pick out wood that will give you enough to do that. For this reason, the final amount of footage you receive in your order will be slightly different, and your final billed charge will be different.

If you want to only buy pieces of an exact size, that will be sold differently. Please contact us for a custom quote.

Sadly, wood cannot be 100% guaranteed to be clear on both sides all the time. Most of our lumber is graded "Select" and better, which means it's at minimum 83% clear on one side.

Beautiful wood!
Review by  Sawduster from Bluff Dale
Ordered just 3 BF - it arrived so well packaged it'd have to be in a shipwreck to have been damaged. Boards are in excellent condition, wondrous stripes through the figure. Should be a treat to make something from this.

9 ft of sapele
Review by  Bearded Wood Charmer from Missouri
ordered 9 ft of sapele, stipulated that stock had to be minimum 66 inches long. Received 2 boards each 67 inches by a full 12 inches. Well matched for color and grain, beautiful stock. One board did have a split about mid way on the jointed edge, about 4 inches long, did not compromise the table top. Curiously, I did not receive a notice that order had shipped until after it had arrived. Great product, great service.

Great product!
Review by  B1 Guy from South Dakota
I placed an order for 60 bd ft of sapele to replace the wood bed of my 69' Chevy C10. It arrived well packaged with only minor damage (I blame UPS). It is beautiful wood, great color and dense. I had it cut and sanded with no problems. The only discrepancy I had was that all my boards were supposed to have one factory edge cut and that was not the case, but in the grand scheme of things and for my needs it mattered little. I would highly recommend these guys, their service and product is great. I will try to post pictures of my truck bed when it's done.
