  1. Decide how much board footage you need
  2. Factor in enough to work with! You'll want to arrange grain patterns, sort color, fix mistakes, run test cuts, make finish samples, etc.
  3. Lumber comes in random widths and lengths. If you need special size considerations, please let us know by using the "Minimum Size Request" box in the order form or by confirming your needs by phone or email.
  4. Expect your final amount of footage to change slightly. Buying by the board foot is an exercise in estimation, therefore we don't know the precise amount of footage you'll receive (and be billed for) until we physically select the wood for your order.
  5. We want to get your order right! So we may need to contact you for clarification. Please use a good phone and email during checkout.

This is the unit of measurement for hardwood lumber when it's bought/sold in random widths and random lengths.

Board footage is a measurement of volume, and it's abbreviated Bd. Ft.

One board foot is equal to 144 cubic inches.

board foot formula

It's a fraction that refers to rough (RGH) sawn thickness of lumber, and it tells you approximately how many quarters of an inch make up the thickness.

Surfaced lumber is thinner because it started out as rough sawn but it's been planed smooth. Planing removes thickness.

Rough Sawn (RGH) Surfaced (S2S)
4/4 ~1" 13/16"
5/4 ~1-1/4" 1-1/16"
6/4 ~1-1/2" 1-5/16"
8/4 ~2" 1-13/16"
12/4 ~3" 2-13/16"

Unless otherwise specified, our lumber is "Surfaced 2 Sides" or S2S for short.

If you can cut your own pieces to size, here's how we can help:

  1. Enter requirements into the order form where it says, "Minimum Size Request"
  2. Tell us what you want to acheive or make
  3. You will receive wood that can yeild what you need. (You will create the final size)
  4. We may need to contact you for clarification

You will cut and/or join your material to create the finished sizes you need. We'll pick out wood that will give you enough to do that. For this reason, the final amount of footage you receive in your order will be slightly different, and your final billed charge will be different.

If you want to only buy pieces of an exact size, that will be sold differently. Please contact us for a custom quote.

Sadly, wood cannot be 100% guaranteed to be clear on both sides all the time. Most of our lumber is graded "Select" and better, which means it's at minimum 83% clear on one side.

Cypress for Adirondack chairs
Review by  Sparky from Peoria Illinois
Wood was excellent quality. It came well packaged. No knots. Boards were all 8' long by 7 1/2" - 8" in width with 5 boards in a pack. I had one side ripped. I made Norm Abram's Adirondack chair which took 1 - 20 board foot pack. Cypress is nice to work with. So far I've made 4 chairs. The cost is about $200 per chair but they are beautiful. I used 3-4 coats of General finishes Exterior 450 which is a clear satin water based topcoat. This brings out the natural beauty of the Cypress. This was my first time using Cypress and I love it. I like cedar but It makes me wheeze.

Cypress project pack
Review by  Glen  from Kirkland, Wa
The Cypress was packed well and the condition of the lumber was very good. The only thing that disappointed me was that the Cypress looked too much like ordinary pine boards. I bought it because the price was good and it looked better in the on-line photos. I'll make use of it. I would recommend Cypress lumber if you are aware what it looks like and it is what you want.

Cypress 4/4 material
Review by  BER from Bellevue, WA USA
Good material- I had not worked with Cypress and found it a good alternative to Cedar. There was some mild checking in a few of the boards - but did not run all the way through the board thickness so i did not cut around it. Material was without twist, fairly clear boards, and any warping was easily dealt with. Boards were well packaged with no shipping damage. I would order this product again.

No Longer Nervous
Review by  Bill K. from Durham, NC USA
Woodworkers Source Craig: I was a little nervous since this was my first order with Woodworkers Source but the package arrived on time; the wood was in excellent condition; the right amount was ordered and shipped; and there will be very little waste. (I also enjoyed the parade encompassing the U.P.S. truck with the marching band and seven dancing girls!) Thank you for a job well done!

OK, but could be better
Review by  MWG from New York, NY USA
The cypress arrived in 4 or 5 boards. A few were clear, but two were gray toned. It would have been nice if the entire Project Pack were all clear so that the wood would look nice together...
