His girl friend had just moved into a new office and she wanted a book shelf to fit in a niche. All the exterior is ebonized Cherry, black aniline dye followed with black Master Gel stain.\u00a0 The door is Macacauba.\u00a0 Satin lacquer is the final top coat.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>\u00a0Building the Case<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>To minize the interior finishing and provide a good wear surface for the shelves, 2 sided black melamine was selected.\u00a0 Dados or rabbets were cut for all of the mating joints, horizontial and verticle.\u00a0 A rabbet was cut to provide for a recessed back.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.woodworkerssource.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/cabinet-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2878 alignright\" alt=\"Dry visible.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When everything check out the case was clamped and drilled for Confirmat screws.\u00a0\u00a0 These screws, specifically for particle board or MDF,\u00a0 require a step drill but will hold tight and not split the panel.\u00a0\u00a0For this part of the project Titebond Melamine glue was used.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.woodworkerssource.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=2841\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2841\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2841\" style=\"width: 448px; height: 279px;\" alt=\"cabinet 2\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Finally glued, screwed and clamped.\u00a0 Notice the 90 degree blocks to bring everything square.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Next step was to attach a Cherry runner to the bottom and 1\/4&#8243; Cherry plywood to\u00a0the exterior of \u00a0each side.\u00a0 The plywood was cut oversized, glued with contact cement and screwed near the top and bottom where the screws would be covered.\u00a0 A quick pass with a flush trim router bit and the end panels matched the sides perfectly.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.woodworkerssource.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/cabinet-3-e1357063679412.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" shelf is about 3&#8243; above the floor.\u00a0 Now is the time to add the base support.\u00a0 This required a cleat to provide a place to attach the support.\u00a0 \u00a0Here is how that all went class=\"wp-caption-text\">The base is strengthened<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Heavy duty adjustable feet (not shown) were then attached to each corner.\u00a0 These feet adjust through a hole in the bottom.\u00a0 The final step when setting the cabinat is to insert a plastic plug into each hole.<\/p>\n<p>The carcase is now complete.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Adding the Details<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The face frame includes a wide piece at the base that aligns with the bottom shelf and a 3\u201d wide piece that aligns with the top of the case. \u00a0\u00a0These pieces were cut to size and clamped in place.\u00a0 The remaining 1-1\/2\u201d wide pieces were carefully cut to fit and clamped.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.woodworkerssource.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/cabinet-6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2845\" alt=\"cabinet 6\" src=\"https:\/\/www.woodworkerssource.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/cabinet-6-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" aligned the faces were taped, labeled and the frame was assembled using a Kreg pocket hole jig.\u00a0\u00a0 The tape clearly identified the front of each piece and helped to make sure the right face was drilled.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.woodworkerssource.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/cabinet-7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium it was dyed black so we would not have to do any staining of the interior after the cabinet was assembled.\u00a0 The frame was glued in place and attached with screws through the base support from the inside and pocket screws through the top and shelves.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.woodworkerssource.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/cabinet-8-e1357183452810.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" alignment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After the clamps came off the ends of the frame were flush trimmed and the black dye completed.\u00a0 At this point the color is more of deep charcoal gray than black.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.woodworkerssource.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/cabinet-9a.jpg\"><img overhang\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 made from 8\/4 Cherry planed to 1-5\/8.\u00a0 The molding is attached to a tongue with glue and screws, leaving a\u00a0 1\/8\u201d groove.\u00a0 Here we are checking the mitre joints and marking the ends to length.<\/p>\n<p>The base molding matches the top, bevel edge and a 1\/8\u201d groove.\u00a0 The center section was drilled for a movable shelf.\u00a0\u00a0 Everything dyed, Master Gel applied and ready for lacquer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2899\" style=\"width: 358px; Door<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2891 alignright\" alt=\"Stock for the Door\" the case for this credenza,\u00a0the\u00a0 star\u00a0\u00a0of the show is the single center door.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The wood is Macacauba from north central Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>This is a great cabinet and furniture wood but it is also used for traditional marimba bars.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The door frame was to be beveled so we decided to make it extra thick.\u00a0 The panel would set proud of the frame.\u00a0 \u00a0Straight grain sections were selected for the frame, cut and face glued to create\u00a0 the thickness.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.woodworkerssource.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Door1-e1357271616824.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" flat piece and a nearly invisible glue line.<\/p>\n<p>For the panel we chose cathedral grain for the center with straight grain on the sides.\u00a0 This was a simple glue up but it always amazes me how things can go wrong.\u00a0 To help make sure things went right the blue tape identified the face and grain orientation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.woodworkerssource.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/door2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2893\" alt=\"door2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.woodworkerssource.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/door3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2894\" alt=\"door3\" 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finally, here is how it went together.\u00a0 The panel tongue floats in a groove in the frame and was positioned so there is a 1\/8\u201d groove all the way around.\u00a0 To keep everything in place a drop of glue was\u00a0applied in the center.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.woodworkerssource.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/door4-e1357272169998.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2895\" alt=\"door4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.woodworkerssource.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/door4-e1357272169998-300x278.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"278\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.woodworkerssource.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/door4-e1357272169998-300x278.jpg 300w, set the bevels were hand planed, scraped and sanded.\u00a0 For strength, splines were added to each corner.\u00a0 One coat of sanding sealer followed with 5 coats of satin lacquer, a little touch up, \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Screw on the back, add the adjustable center shelf,\u00a0 dust\u00a0 and this project is ready to go home.<\/p>\n<p><a
