{"id":16,"date":"2009-06-09T17:59:07","date_gmt":"2009-06-09T21:59:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.woodworkerssource.com\/blog\/?p=16"},"modified":"2010-05-08T03:15:59","modified_gmt":"2010-05-08T07:15:59","slug":"a-dual-purpose-roll-top-table-made-of-ipe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.woodworkerssource.com\/blog\/woodworking-projects\/a-dual-purpose-roll-top-table-made-of-ipe\/","title":{"rendered":"A Dual Purpose Roll-Top Camp Table made of Ipe"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_11\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.woodworkerssource.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/cocktail_table-9.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-11\" title=\"cocktail_table-9\" src=\"https:\/\/www.woodworkerssource.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/cocktail_table-9-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Roll top camp table made of Ipe wood\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Roll top camp table made of Ipe wood<\/p><\/div>\n<p>One of my challenges as a father of a toddler and as an avid camper is finding a table that&#8217;s a suitable size for my daughter.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve tried plopping her plate on top of two stacked\u00a0 Storm Cases.\u00a0 The right height, but a little too shanty-like.<\/p>\n<p>A few companies make a 20-ish inch high table: Byer of Maine for example.\u00a0 Nice table, but just not quite what I have in mind for the ideal table.<\/p>\n<p><em>Why not just make one?<\/em> Ah yes, the great benefit of custom woodworking means you can make anything you want, just the way you want (<em>ahem<\/em>, so long as you have enough time and money, of course . . .).\u00a0 So I set out to just get the job done with a simple design in mind and a perfect outdoor wood: ipe.<!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.woodworkerssource.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/cocktail_table-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-4\" title=\"cocktail_table-2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.woodworkerssource.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/cocktail_table-2-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"cocktail_table-2\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ipe displays a nice even color and looks spectacular with a clear finish<\/p><\/div>\n<p>You might know ipe (pronounced <em><strong>ee<\/strong><\/em>-pay) as a nearly bomb-proof timber that comes out of South America (<a title=\"Details and information about Ipe wood\" href=\"https:\/\/www.woodworkerssource.com\/online_show_wood.php?wood=Tabebuia%20serratifolia\" target=\"_blank\">get more details here<\/a>).\u00a0 For the most part, the decking industry is largest consumer of ipe.\u00a0 Its density and resistance to rot are virtually unmatched.\u00a0 Digging a little deeper, we&#8217;ve learned that ipe has a <em>fire resistance<\/em> rating identical to that of\u00a0 &#8212; are you sitting down for this? &#8212; <em>concrete<\/em>.\u00a0 Got an outdoor project?\u00a0 Sure thing, ipe will do.<\/p>\n<p>Now, wood that will be subjected to the elements should still have some protection added.\u00a0 Generally speaking, latex paint is one of the best coatings for protecting wood &#8211; for utilitarian projects that&#8217;s fine, but when using a fine hardwood you probably don&#8217;t want to cover it with paint.\u00a0 Yet there are a few choices for clear finish that work well on exterior wood projects; spar varnish and epoxy resin for two examples.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ul class=\"buybutton\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.woodworkerssource.com\/Ipe.html\">Click here for Ipe lumber prices, reviews, and to buy online<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I chose Deft Exterior Wood Finish, which is an oil that&#8217;s simple to apply. You know the old adage, &#8220;oil and water don&#8217;t mix,&#8221; so a penetrating oil finish helps the wood shed water. \u00a0 It will need to be re-applied about once a year, but that&#8217;s easy enough to do.<\/p>\n<p>The construction on this table is simple, and with just a few details here and there give it a little class.\u00a0 The threaded brass inserts contrast the dark wood nicely.\u00a0 And all the slats and legs have a basic 3\/16&#8243; round over.\u00a0 <em>Wah-la<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Wait a sec, did this say &#8220;dual purpose?&#8221;\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 First, it&#8217;s a mighty fine kids eating table.\u00a0 Second . . . when she&#8217;s gone nighty-night . . . it&#8217;s a cocktail table.<br \/>\n\n\t\t<style type=\"text\/css\">\n\t\t\t#gallery-1 {\n\t\t\t\tmargin:
