tropical walnut hall table by Kevin Billings
This floating top hall table is made by Kevin Billings. The base is made out of red oak and the top is a solid piece of tropical walnut finished with Danish oil.

While this wood is related to the American black walnut that you might know, this variety of walnut comes from mountainous regions of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Argentina. Sometimes it's called Nogal, Argentine Walnut, or Peruvian Walnut.

Tropical walnut grows to about 100 feet tall and rather straight - the color is largely consistent (especially compared to American Black Walnut), with a dark chocolate brown color and no virtually no sapwood. The wood is straight grained, moderately porous, and softer than red oak but about the same as American black walnut. It's not bad to work with, goes easy on your cutters, and can be routed, sawn, planed and sanded without difficulty.

Finishing tips:

  • The wood accepts all wood finishes, but oils such as tung oil and boiled linseed oil darken the wood and enhance contrast
  • Lacquer, shellac, and varnish are all compatible with tropical walnut
  • Grain filler can be used to bring contrast to the wood pores or to achieve a glass-smooth top coat finish
