Botanical Name: Dalbergia retusa

What's the wood like?
Hard and heavy for sure, but machines and turns nicely. Finishes very smoothly, partly because oils in the wood produce a natural polish; however that may cause adhesion problems with lacquer or urethane finishes. The tree is small and irregular, so boards are also (generally speaking) small.

How's the color?
Variegated orange, yellow dark red with irregular black stripes.

A rather small to medium tree that matures to heights about 45-60 feet. Trunks are 18-24'' but form poorly with odd shape.

Cocabolo turning squares, 11.17.2011

The cocabolo squares I received from Woodworker source were very nicly figured with exception color variation. the items I make are small in size so every bit of grain you can get helps with the over all looks of the product. I am very happy with the wood.

I love coco and it is a great wood to work with but you do have to remember that it is a naturally oily wood. Lacquer finishing does work but clean it thoroughly with mineral spirits first then apply VERY thin coats. Even then the lacquer will take a while to harden (maybe three or four days. The previous comment about epoxy being the only bonding agent that works seems to hold true as well. Regular wood glue just doesn't like oil.
