Why Choose Alder?
Go Clear or Knotty
Alder has a strikingly similar grain patter to cherry, so while it's commonly used for rustic furniture, that's not the only reason to use it. Arrange your boards to hide the occasional knots and you can create classy looking projects.
Choose regular alder for a mostly clear option (83% or higher), or choose our knotty alder when you really want some knots to work with.
Light & Easy to Work
Alder is moderately soft and lightweight, so it's very easy to shape, sand, rout and cut. With alder you can count on a consistent pale color, too. Be cautious about staining this wood to change the color: to prevent blotching, you'll want to use a pre-stain conditioner or apply a thin coat of sealer before applying a gel stain. But be sure to see our video tips on achieving a rustic finish if you want to see how to apply dye to alder.
