What's the wood like?
Extremely fine textured and moderately soft. Blackheart does have good tone qualities and bends easily, so it's becoming more popular with musical instrument makers. The wood is difficult to match in color from board to board, which makes the color variety a standard characteristic of this wood.
How's the color?
Pale tan to white with irregular and interesting dark brown to nearly black markings, streaks and stripes. The color variation is very sporadic.
Does it go by other names?
Tasmanian Sassafras, Black Heart, Blackheart, Southern Sassafras
What could I use it for?
Handles, turnery, musical instruments, carving, and accessories
What is the tree like?
Grows to 80 feet high and a small diameter of about 30 inches.
Where is it from?
Tasmania & Australia
