Botanical Name: Dalbergia retusa
What's the wood like?
Hard and heavy for sure, but machines and turns nicely. Finishes very smoothly, partly because oils in the wood produce a natural polish; however that may cause adhesion problems with lacquer or urethane finishes. The tree is small and irregular, so boards are also (generally speaking) small.
How's the color?
Variegated orange, yellow dark red with irregular black stripes.
Does it go by other names?
Cocobolo, Nicaraguan rosewood, Granadillo, Jacarandaholz, Palisander, Palissandro, Nambar, Rosewood, Pau preto Urauna, Palo negro, Funera, Cocobolo prieto, Palisandre
What could I use it for?
Turnings, handles, musical instruments, inlay, fine accessories, jewelry, accents, some furniture parts, flooring.
What is the tree like?
A rather small to medium tree that matures to heights about 45-60 feet. Trunks are 18-24'' but form poorly with odd shape.
Where is it from?
Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua

It has great figuring and color variation. Coco also works very easily and finishes mirror smooth. I use Formby's Tung Oil. 6 coats with ultra fine steel wool between each coat. Then 3 applications of carnuba wax (Johnson's car wax works well). Polish to high sheen between each coat and you have a great finish that is easy to polish out scratches. Works fantastic for pistol grips.

This sample of Cocobolo was very nice looking and great to work with so far.. The project (first Damascus knife) is almost complete but I have not put a finish on it yet. I cannot make up my mind, tung oil. polyurethane or CA. Trying to find some help from someone who has worked with Cocobolo wood.

The item received was exactly as advertised and perfect for the job I had to do. It came to me quickly with plenty of time leftover for me to finish my project and fill my customer's order. I know I can buy online with confidence from Wood Workers Source after seeing their product matches their description.
