Over 30 years ago our current stock of Indian Rosewood lumber was imported into the U.S.

A ukelele manufacturer had brought the material in, but stopped operations shortly thereafter. Their (incredible) rosewood lumber just sat. And sat. And sat.

Here we are in 2010. We received an email last month from a supplier with the subject line, "What do pork chop side burns, the Ford Torino, and this rosewood lumber have in common?" Well, I the answer is that no one's seen any of them since the 70s.

It's not that Indian Rosewood is impossible to get. It's just that this particular inventory is vintage. And many woodworkers like that. The wood has been still, just waiting for the chance to be appreciated and put into a project. Important note: this rosewood was also cut a little plump! It measures a full 1" thick and is surfaced on both sides.

cherry lumberHard Maple trees have a dark center of heartwood with a large sapwood ring where most of the prized lumber comes from. With "country maple" the boards are cut from the entire log and they're not hand-separated by color, resulting in lumber that has a mix of color from white to dark brown, generous widths, and bigger savings!

cherry lumber
Knotty Cherry -- ON SALE $2.99

reg. $4.99

cherry lumberIf you're cutting out parts 24" long or shorter, go ahead and use knotty cherry. The lumber contains tight, sound knots, which are also fine for incorporating into your projects if you like character, but also provide a lot of gorgeous clear red heartwood if you're willing to work around the knots -- and you'll save a bundle, too.

hickory lumber

quilted maple top on shaker table built by Woodworkers JournalHey Wait a Sec.
That's a Great Shaker Table.

We love beautiful hand-made furniture. And we're especially honored when we get to see our lumber used in a magnificent project.

It was a pleasant surprise to learn that a little batch of quilted maple from our warehouse had been used by Woodworker's Journal for the tops of a pair of shaker tables.

When sorting through the mail, I glanced at the magazine then continued on without a thought.

Then I said, "Hey wait. That was a good looking table." I shuffled back to the magazine. Then I remembered. "Oh yeah, they bought some quilted maple a few months ago. Wow! Those must be the boards!"

It's nice to know that our guys picked out wood that the crew at Woodworker's Journal found to be stunning enough to be used in the project on the cover. They don't just allow anything on that prime piece of real estate.
