Welcome to This Week's Newsletter

With the New Yankee Workshop calling it quits, and the deaths of Krenov and Maloof this year, it looks like there's an open slot or two for "inspirational woodworker."

And there's a lot of competition for it. Stan sent in a couple pictures of his cutting boards, which you can see below. There are also a number of new projects that folks have uplaoded to the Project Gallery recently. Care to share yours as well?

Read on for more about great woods to use in your hardwood cutting board projects.

Have a nice weekend,

Make Big Smiles with a Small Amount of Wood

unique cutting boardsA perfect woodworking gift idea is a hardwood cutting board.

They're useful, easy to design and build, and everybody can use one. So why not make a dozen of these for gifts this year?

You can go for simple by using just hard maple. Or you can leap forward a few levels and do what Stan Jones did with these cutting boards you see to the right. Bang up job, right?

While there are hundreds of ways to make a cutting board, we're here to give you some clues as to which woods will work well in a cutting board.

Light Woods? Definitely Hard Maple, but beech would also work. Some light colored exotics would do as well: satinwood, guatambu, lyptus.

Dark Woods? Walnut, purple heart, bubinga, afrormosia, wenge, mahogany . . . to a name a few.

Try Curupay! It's ON SALE, looks great, and will be perfect in a cutting board:
