No kidding! An alternative to high-priced teak! But Iroko also has characteristics of its own that are worth knowing about. It's about as hard as walnut, which makes it a breeze to carve and rout. Add a clear finish and you'll see this wood come to life with a rich, iridescent golden brown -- you'll make some head-turning furniture with this wood.
Sizes you can expect:

[+] What if I need specific sizes? You'll have to cut your own pieces to size. Hardwood lumber is sold as a bulk raw product, which means that our stacks of lumber have a big variety of sizes most often from 4" up to 12" wide, and 6' to 16' long.
- Only some unusual exotic woods are narrower than 4" and under 6' long. This is clearly stated when that's the case, everything else is larger.
- We always ship the longest boards possible, and rarely ship boards less than 48" long unless you request shorter. The longest we can ship by UPS is 96" (that's 8').
For general fine woodworking, the various widths and lengths meet the needs and desires of woodworkers building furniture, cabinetry, and fine woodwork. But we do understand that certain projects have some requirements, and we're happy to help you out.
Here's how we can help you get the sizes you need:
- We can hand-select material that will yeild what you need. Type your needs into the "Selection" field right above the Add to Cart button above when you place your order. 4 things to know about size requests
- We can do some custom milling or cutting. Please call or email to talk about your needs.
- Thickness: 13/16'' thick, surfaced smooth two sides (4/4 S2S)

Botanical Name: Chlorophora excelsa
What's the wood like?
Since Iroko has good weathering properties, it's a decent substitute for teak and even shares a similar color range. Medium to coarse texture with an interlocking grain that often produces interesting patterns. Open pores requires filling for a smooth finish. Works pretty easily with both power and hand tools.
How's the color?
Color varies from pale golden brown to dark chocolate brown.
Does it go by other names?
African Teak, Moreira, Abang, Doussie, Mvule, Iroko, Mvuli, Kambala, Odum
What could I use it for?
Boat building and marine work, furniture and cabinet work.
What is the tree like?
The tree is quite large and may reach 160 feet in height. The bole is straight, cylindrical, and may be clear of branches to 80 feet. Logs usually average about 30'' diameter.
Where is it from?
Primarily Ivory Coast and Cameroons

The Iroko is beautiful. This is a great deal for a Teak substitute that looks and performs just as well.

Very workable wood. Cuts nice, routs nice and the finished golden hue is amazing. There is a lot of depth to Iroko when finished.
I shellacked with Zinsers 100% wax free. I like a little raised grain to my finished projects and this wood lends itself to a subtle texture.
If you like working with Oak try Iroko on your next project and I think you will be very pleased.
BTW... no stain needed to get that beautiful golden color!

I was expecting to have to glue up a few boards and you provided me with one board that was wide enough for the project. The wood had a very nice complexion.
Your confirmation email was hilarious! I forwarded it to everyone where I work and all my friends... They all loved it! There are a few wood workers in that group that will probably give you guys a try at some point. Excellent marketing! Keep up the good work!

It's pretty good stuff. Lightweight and about as hard as walnut. maybe a bit softer. I like the way it works, but it does have a scent when you cut it. Not terrible just strong. It's pretty good as a substitute for teak as it's even a bit oily.
