It gets the name 'ebony' because of its rich and solid near-black color. The wood is extremly heavy and hard, which is why it's often used in flooring. It's not terribly easy to work with, but it is also a fraction of the price of the more popular African Black Ebony.

Thickness: 13/16'' thick, surfaced smooth two sides (4/4 S2S)
Widths: 3''-6'' with the edges still rough. Straight line ripping on one edge is available as well (see below).
Lengths: Up to 4' only.

My experience, 3.10.2010

Theres some good and bad to this wood. First, the good. I cut into my first piece on the table saw and I was nervous about how tough it would be because it was pretty heavy stuff. Honestly it wasn't too bad. It cut like butter. Loved working it right away. Then I needed to plane some down just a bit, to a final 3/4". I got no chipout or burning (I have a powermatic with the Byrd head). But still I though the wood machined really well. Now the bad. It really lightens up when you cut into it. I had to let it sit a few days to darken up again and I used a BLO finish and that helped too. Don't get me wrong it's a beautiful wood and it'll pass for gaboon ebony especially at this price. I've been doing this long enough that I remember when gaboon ebony was about this same price. A LOOOOONG time ago! HA
