What makes quarter sawn white oak so special is its appearance. It's one of the few woods that reveal stunning rays, or fleck figure - and that's the kind of white oak that's characteristic in arts and crafts, mission, or craftsman style woodwork. The wood makes exceptionally durable and beautiful furniture because it's dense and hard, yet it saws, routs, planes with better than satisfactory results. It's a favorite among furniture builders.
Finishing tip for quarter sawn white oak: There are a number of finishing methods to make the figure pop. We've found one of the easiest yet effect methods is to use a Danish oil (clear natural or colored, depends on your taste), then apply a clear top coat. Read about it in our blog >>>

You'll have to cut your own pieces to size. Hardwood lumber is sold as a bulk raw product, which means that our stacks of lumber have a big variety of sizes most often from 4" up to 12" wide, and 6' to 16' long.
Only some unusual exotic woods are narrower than 4" and under 6' long. This is clearly stated when that's the case, everything else is larger.
We always ship the longest boards possible, and rarely ship boards less than 48" long unless you request shorter. The longest we can ship by UPS is 96" (that's 8').
For general fine woodworking, the various widths and lengths meet the needs and desires of woodworkers building furniture, cabinetry, and fine woodwork. But we do understand that certain projects have some requirements, and we're happy to help you out.
Here's how we can help you get the sizes you need:
We can hand-select material that will yield what you need. Type your needs into the "Selection Request" field right above the Add to Cart button above when you place your order. 4 things to know about size requests

All the lumber I ordered I would rate as excellent (applies to 4/4 and 8/4). All boards were straight and true with nearly zero "defects" and an absolute minimum of sap-wood. This was my first venture into mail-order stock. I am very satisfied and will be a repeat customer

I have bought a number of different types of wood from you folks and always been pleased with the quality. However this batch was very poor. I could only use about 80% of it. The other 20% went in the burn barrel. I will continue do buy wood from you because the majority of my purchases have been good or excellent

The quality is great. I would normally rate this 4 stars instead of 5 because there isn't a lot of ray flake in the wood, but they called and told me that before they shipped it, so I knew what I was getting and it is what I expected. It isn't my first order, and all of them have been as they described them.
