[+] What if I need specific sizes? You'll have to cut your own pieces to size. Hardwood lumber is sold as a bulk raw product, which means that our stacks of lumber have a big variety of sizes most often from 4" up to 12" wide, and 6' to 16' long.
- Only some unusual exotic woods are narrower than 4" and under 6' long. This is clearly stated when that's the case, everything else is larger.
- We always ship the longest boards possible, and rarely ship boards less than 48" long unless you request shorter. The longest we can ship by UPS is 96" (that's 8').
For general fine woodworking, the various widths and lengths meet the needs and desires of woodworkers building furniture, cabinetry, and fine woodwork. But we do understand that certain projects have some requirements, and we're happy to help you out.
Here's how we can help you get the sizes you need:
- We can hand-select material that will yeild what you need. Type your needs into the "Selection" field right above the Add to Cart button above when you place your order. 4 things to know about size requests
- We can do some custom milling or cutting. Please call or email to talk about your needs.

Botanical Name: Tabebuia spp
What's the wood like?
This is one strong, tough, and resilient wood. Ipe's naturally durable and weather resistant so it's fantastic in outdoor projects. Moderately difficult to work especially with hand tools; has a blunting effect on cutting edges, however Ipe finishes smoothly except where grain is very roey. The rich dark color makes great accents.
How's the color?
Light to dark olive brown with greenish caste, often with lighter or darker streaks.
Does it go by other names?
Amapa prieta, Bastard lignum vitae, Bethabara, Canaguate, Cortez, Ebano verde, Ebene vert, Greenhart, Guayacan, Ipe, Ironwood, Lapacho, Lapacho negro, Pau d'Arco, Polvillo, Tajibo
What could I use it for?
Furniture, flooring, industrial uses, tool handles, exterior applications, decking, inlay, furniture parts.
What is the tree like?
May grow to 140-150 feet in height with trunk diameters of 72'' and frequently to heights of 100 feet and diameters of 24-36''. Boles are clear to 60 feet and more, with or without buttresses.
Where is it from?
Mexico, Central and South America

Great wood! I built a barbeque cart from it about three years ago. It is still as strong as the day I finished it. Still looks great and has taken the weather in stride. I leave it out all four seasons through the winter in the northeast, The snow and ice doesn't bother it and not one screw has backed out or lost its' grip. I don't have a boat anymore, but I wouldn't hesitate to use it for making trim parts for an ocean-going vessel. I am sure it would hold up very well.

What a cool wood. I was afraid of it at first, being so hard and dense. It's super heavy. But damn it's a pleasure to work. Rips and cross cuts beautifully and without trouble. So long as I'm using the proper blade. Turns *nearly* black when I finish it with an oil. Lacquer looks pretty good too.

Super heavy wood but I love the way it works. You can get it to rival black ebony with an oil finish too. Turns super dark if you use oil. Great wood.
