Moderately durable, yet lightweight with an even color, you can use alder for furniture and cabinetry. The tight grained wood is easy to work and goes easy on your tools. Use a clear finish to achieve a mild color that's darker than maple yet lighter than cherry; or stain it for a rustic 'old world' look as this wood takes stain unevenly, which creates a dramatic effect for those with that taste.
Sizes you can expect:
Thickness
7/8'' thick, surfaced smooth two sides (4/4 S2S) |
Widths
4''-8'' with the edges still rough. Straight line ripping on one edge is available as well (available above with your order). |
Lengths Up to 8'. Longer lengths may be available for local pick up or truck freight shipment. Contact us to verify. |

[+] What if I need specific sizes? You'll have to cut your own pieces to size. Hardwood lumber is sold as a bulk raw product, which means that our stacks of lumber have a big variety of sizes most often from 4" up to 12" wide, and 6' to 16' long.
- Only some unusual exotic woods are narrower than 4" and under 6' long. This is clearly stated when that's the case, everything else is larger.
- We always ship the longest boards possible, and rarely ship boards less than 48" long unless you request shorter. The longest we can ship by UPS is 96" (that's 8').
For general fine woodworking, the various widths and lengths meet the needs and desires of woodworkers building furniture, cabinetry, and fine woodwork. But we do understand that certain projects have some requirements, and we're happy to help you out.
Here's how we can help you get the sizes you need:
- We can hand-select material that will yeild what you need. Type your needs into the "Selection" field right above the Add to Cart button above when you place your order. 4 things to know about size requests
- We can do some custom milling or cutting. Please call or email to talk about your needs.

Botanical Name: Alnus rubra
What's the wood like?
A soft, relatively low-strength, straight-grained, even-textured wood. Works well with hand and machine tools, but sharp cutting edges need to be maintained to prevent tearing the grain. The wood is rarely wider than 6 due to the small size of the trees.
How's the color?
Pale Yellow to Reddish Brown.
Does it go by other names?
Alder, Oregon alder, Pacific coast alder, Red alder, Western alder
What could I use it for?
Rustic furniture, entry doors, moldings, turning, carving, toys, plywood, veneer, cabinets, musical instruments.
What is the tree like?
A relatively small tree, reaching about 50ft in height and producing a trunk in diameter up to 15''.
Where is it from?
Pacific Coast of North America.

I bought a load of this from the local store. I have made several small projects for my office including a shadow box to hold medals, picture frames and a business card holder that I had laser engraved with the company logo. I am almost finished with a raised panel desk. The wood cuts and shapes well and takes stain nicely. If you like the rustic look of knots, this is the wood for you.

The lumber I received was well dried, straight, and of excellent quality. I even had some planks that were wider than promised and saved me some time gluing pieces together.

I bought some Alder wood, and it came exactly as I was hoping, exactly when you said it would come, and looks great. I can't wait to start working with the various pieces. I would definitely order from you again.

Received my knotty alder and it was packaged very nicely.
The wood was in great shape.
I was able to cut around the knots and get a lot of clear wood,
the areas with the knots will make some interesting bowls as well
First of many purchases from your company
