Very hard and dense wood and a decent substitute for ebony thanks to the nearly black color. It's not highly porous, so polish it naturally or give it a glassy surface with lacquer.

Tree size is reported to vary considerably with species, but some attain heights of about 110 feet (33 m). Typical trunk diameter is reported to be about about 24 inches (60 cm), sometimes reaching about 36 inches (90 cm).
